A month with the Google Nexus One in Sweden

I've had my Google phone for about a month now and when it arrived, like with all new things, you tend to play with it a lot and eventually it just fits into the place and reason why you bought it. Not the Nexus One - I'm still playing and it's getting a battering.

To say I'm pleased with the phone would be an understatement and I'm not sure why exactly. Is it because it is manufactured by HTC, or is it the super fast processor or is it Android 2.1 - the latest operating system from Google?

I think it's a mix of all three, but I think the operating system wins, only because it is helped by the processor and while I never made the jump to the iPhone and can not really say like for like it is better, I know it is because I've put it up against an iPhone and on speed test it wins hands down and keeps getting better the longer the battle goes on and especially when you start asking the iPhone to do things at the same pace as the Nexus One.

Yes, the iPhone has more apps but thousands of those apps do the same thing. Android needs a lot more and they are coming, but seeing as I never had an iPhone I'm not going to miss what I never had and I can only look forward to what is coming.

So, you can say I am very happy with the Google phone and I'll be even happier when they start selling them in Sweden as I can only charge it via USB, which would be okay if I had a USB slot next to the bed, but I don't and even now, a month down the line, it has to sleep next to me.

Reasons to be happy

  • The screen: 3.7 inch widescreen WVGA AMOLED touchscreen, 800 x 480 pixels, 100,000:1 typical contrast ratio and 1ms typical response rate
  • 5 megapixel camera: anyone want ot buy an E61 with 1 megapixel?
  • Android: this operating system really is fantastic
  • Apps integration: not perfect yet but it will get better but how everything just works in my pocket is fantastic. You don't have to be a Gmail or Apps user to really like this phone but it will make you love it if easily getting to your data is important and if you like access to your email

But, do I have any issues with the phone? Well actually yes; battery life for one. I have to charge the phone every day and because it is getting charged via USB it takes ages. I know this will be fixed when the phone is sold in Sweden, although there is no date for this yet and Google are not telling me, so I'll live with it until then. I could also turn a few things off and I have experimented and gotten two days out of the battery, but when you have a phone like this, you want it to be doing everything for you and you don't want to be hitting 'refresh' to see if you have any email.

Something else was file management - there doesn't appear to be an easy way to access files on the phone itself so you have to install an app - I'm all for installing apps, but I just think that should have been something that the guys over at Google put a bit of thought into. The ASTRO app is fantastic, so it's all good, but I don't like installing things on anything when really it shouldn't be necessary.

Google Docs is another little thing that bugs me. Almost all my documents are now stored online with Google Apps but there is no easy way to get to these from the phone. When I say easy, I basically want to click an icon and while it isn't difficult to set up a short cut, I want something that is built for the operating system and phone rather than me creating a link to a web page. I'm told they are working on it and that it is coming, but Google Docs is such a core component of the Google family, it just should have been included.

I also had issues with setting up the phone to access the internet through my carrier and Telia couldn't help, but I got it fixed fairly quickly via the Nexus One forum over at Google and jut swapped in my numbers.

But - take those issues away and I know they will be in time and I'm over the moon. Some people have had issues with the four buttons along the bottom of the phone, in so much they were finding it hard to find the actual spot where you needed to touch and then hitting them accidentally while typing but I've got small fingers and while i was worried initially, it just seemed to work for me. However, I really would like to know what the trackball is for; answers on a postcard please.

I'm off to play Robo Defense.
